Choosing the Right Funeral Music

Choosing the 'right' music for a Funeral

The title of this blog is almost misleading, as technically there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing the right music for a funeral service.

Music is often intrinsic to any celebration, and funerals are no exception. Today, songs from right across the musical spectrum are heard at funerals – everything from Beethoven to the Beatles and Metallica to Mozart.

Everyone is different, and their preferences and choices will ultimately be different when it comes to choosing funeral music for a service.

Some considerations when selecting music for a funeral

Selecting music for a funeral is a deeply personal and meaningful task. Music has the power to evoke emotions, bring back memories, and provide comfort to those grieving.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right music for a funeral service.

Reflect on the Person’s Preferences

Consider the musical tastes and favourite songs of the person who has died. Did they have a favourite artist, genre, or song that always resonated with them? Including music that was meaningful to them can provide a sense of connection and honour their memory in a special way.

Consider the Tone and Atmosphere

The tone of the music should match the atmosphere you wish to create. Some may prefer uplifting and celebratory songs, while others might choose more solemn and reflective pieces. Think about the overall mood you feel is appropriate for both the person who has died and the people who are attending the service.

Balance Tradition and Personalisation

If the funeral is taking place in a religious or cultural setting, there might be traditional hymns or songs that are customary. Balancing these with personal selections can create a service that feels both respectful and unique.

Lyric Sensitivity

Pay close attention to the lyrics. Choose songs with messages that are appropriate for the occasion. Avoid songs with themes that might be considered inappropriate or that could inadvertently cause distress.

Live versus Recorded Music

Decide whether you prefer live music or recorded tracks. Live performances, such as a soloist, choir, or instrumentalist, can add a personal touch and create a powerful atmosphere. Recorded music, on the other hand, offers a wider range of options and can be more convenient.

Involve Family and Friends

Involve family members and friends in the decision-making process. They might have suggestions that you hadn’t considered or might want to contribute a performance themselves. This can also help ensure the selections resonate with those attending.

Choosing the right music for a funeral is about honouring the memory of the deceased and providing solace to the living. Take the time to select pieces that reflect the essence of the person being remembered, and don’t be afraid to mix traditional and personal touches to create a heartfelt tribute.

"Music is a lens through which to see who we are. Every phrase of every piece of music is trying to tell a story."

Live Music

Recognising the importance of music at funerals and life celebrations, Tobin Brothers has developed an extensive Recorded Music Library of more than 8,000 titles to help families choose that special song, hymn or piece of music for the service.
