It is often not until we are put in a position where we must make these kinds of decisions, that we discover there are distinct differences between a coffin and a casket. In Australia, we hear the term casket much less, or sometimes use the terms interchangeably, and while their main purpose is ultimately the same, each has slight differences in appearance and function. A Casket is rectangular in shape and the top attaches with hinges, sometimes with a split in the middle, allowing for viewings or open-casket services.
Caskets also tend to be bigger than coffins, featuring a more opulently decorated interior and a more regal looking exterior, often with an arched top, a more intricate design, and/or a bar handle. A coffin on the other hand, has 6 to 8 sides, with the greatest width at the shoulder and tapering down towards the feet. The top of a coffin comes off in one piece so it is so it is not generally used for viewings and the like. Coffins tend to be slightly smaller and are usually less expensive due to the use of less wood.
The size should comfortably accommodate the person who has died. Your funeral director can help you determine the appropriate size based on their measurements.
