Jayne Alexandra Barker 18 August 1984 – 30 December 2020
In loving memory of Jayne Alexandra Barker who sadly passed away on the 30th of December 2020, aged 36.
Jayne was the much loved eldest daughter of Greg and Sue, much loved elder sister to Luke and Sarah, loved and adored granddaughter of Ronda and Bert Barker (dec.) and Margaret and Wesley Wilson (dec.), loved and cherished stepdaughter to Denis and stepsister to Chris, Zac and Amelia, loved like a daughter by Liz, loved niece, cousin, friend and teacher by many.
Jayne will be sadly missed by all who met and knew her, were inspired by her, were admired by her, were helped and supported in their profession by her, were taught by her, were befriended by her, and who followed her over social media. Jayne touched the hearts and minds of all who came close to her here in the local community, nationally and internationally.
Jayne will remain forever in our hearts, minds and media.
Jayne Alexandra Barker was born in Greensborough on the 18th of August 1984, with a gorgeous mop of platinum blonde hair and very fair skin.
On the arrival of Luke in 1986 Jayne found she had not only a new baby in the family, but a new dress-up doll as she used to dress Luke up in all manner of regalia and be both a little mother and teacher to him. From that moment Jayne was destined to learn, to teach and to influence others.
The arrival of Sarah in 1989 added another little student to her home classroom, and this bond continued to grow through later life as they shared accommodation and many fun times.
Jayne commenced primary school at St Francis Xavier in Montmorency and savoured every moment of her education there, always writing stories, becoming a State finalist in a writing competition. Jayne was School Captain in primary and relished singing and performing, appearing in lead roles for several school productions.
At an early age during primary school, Jayne also pursued her love of music and was selected in the Australian Girls Choir, receiving a scholarship and staying with the choir for over 3 years, performing and carolling.
For her secondary education Jayne attended Catholic Ladies College in Eltham and by then was firmly fixed on a career in teaching with a passion for music. Her destiny was evident.
Jayne worked at the local supermarket in Montmorency where she had a part time job after school and at weekends. Jayne was also a member in her first band, writing and performing in Battle of the Bands which they won, as well as winning as solo vocalist in local singing competitions. Life was fun.
On completing high school, Jayne pursued a qualification in music, graduating from NMIT in 2003 and then completed a teaching degree enabling her to follow her dreams in both vocations.
Jayne was married in 2004 for 5 years, living in Broken Hill and travelling through Europe during this time.
Jayne volunteered for many church youth groups, directing and choreographing both stage and music. Jayne continued her singing, carolling and love for music in all aspects of her life, performing in several musicals.
Before settling in to her local teaching profession, Jayne was determined to explore life and music, and broaden her horizons in both so left for the UK and Europe in 2012 on a 2 year working holiday visa, teaching in the UK at an international school across all subjects. This trip found her travelling and working away for several years.
On her return Jayne pursued a number of opportunities, both in her career of teaching and in building several side businesses as a private singing teacher, a band member, an entrepreneur supporting and encouraging youth with a prospective musical career through generous gifts of keyboards through her charity GOOD NOTE MUSIC.
It was during this time following explorative surgery that Jayne’s persistent symptoms were finally and fully diagnosed as ovarian cancer at the tender age of 31. The type of cancer was very slow growing and extremely resistant to any treatment. Jayne had several operations to remove and bypass cancer, along with many sessions of chemotherapy to prolong her life. Jayne’s illness was pronounced as terminal.
During this time at a social occasion Jayne met Melle who became a dear close friend and partner. They shared their life experiences, their families and their ideals, up until Jayne’s passing.
Jaynes more recent business endeavour was in children’s music as a colleague, mentor, and composer for the children’s group Team Dream. This was a pursuit which gave Jayne much joy through the delight and excitement of the audience - both the young and the young at heart, as well as great excitement to the children. Jayne also found much love and comfort in her fur-child Timmy; they were inseparable. One of Jayne’s last gigs was playing the piano at her Gran’s nursing home in Lower Plenty, to the delight and praise of the residents and while not quite the genre of Jayne’s music, still gave Jayne great satisfaction and enormous pleasure.
Jayne’s health continued to deteriorate and during palliative care she found herself having to go more often to hospital to get reinvigorated with all the nutrients her body could not extract and Jayne’s capacity to eat diminished to being measured in teaspoons. After celebrating the Toohey Christmas on Christmas Day and then the Barker Christmas on Boxing Day Jayne was admitted to hospital on 27th of December and sadly but peacefully passed away on 30th of December with family by her side.
Jayne left us a legacy of how to love life to its fullest, of the will to achieve, of compassion, of equality, of the right to freedom and expression, and the power and indestructability of love and friendship.
Jayne will be deeply and sadly missed but her spirit will remain with us, in our hearts, forever.
Rest quietly my angel, my darling, for you have earned this respite.
